Revolv Collective invites you to The Collective’s Hub, part of Brighton Photo Fringe taking place at Phoenix Brighton from Saturday 30th September to Sunday 29th November 2018.

4uzhbina is a photographic installation, created collaboratively by the artists Krasimira Butseva and Lina Ivanova, for Brighton Photo Fringe 2018. The word ‘4uzhbina’ describes a non-existent place, an illusory location, which cannot be found on any map, nevertheless it could be accessed by anybody. It is simply an invention of the tongue, existing only in the spoken and written Bulgarian language. The term contains simultaneously the essence of a no-man’s land and a dolce vita. 

In her new work, Krasimira Butseva uses moving image and appropriates found photography and materials, entangling personal and fictional histories. In her short film, she remembers the day, in which Bulgaria was accepted in the European Union, while performing repetitive rituals and readings. Using a found family archive originating from Kent, Krasimira plays with connotation and denotation, shaping a completely new narrative out of the photographs. Through this body of work, she explores the way in which politics inform nations and form identities, along with the correlation between native roots and cultural routes.

Lina Ivanova’s autobiographical piece explores issues of representation, identity and status of the migrant in the birth country. Photography becomes a power tool to remember, to store memories and experiences and possess a space, in which one feels insecure.  The manipulation of family archival records creates a personal interpretation of one’s own origin. The use of alternative processes suggests the transition from a state of familiar to a state of the foreign. Fragile family photos are reproduced on the surfaces of domestic objects and removed from their expected setting providing a context of the every-day in a moment of return.

Routes OR Roots

Routes OR Roots invites participants to take part in a two-hour long workshop delivered by Revolv Collective. The activities encompassing notions of belonging and the self, welcomes participants to contribute to the workshop with personal objects, photography and memories in order to form a narrative of personal and collective diaspora. The workshop is open to people from any age and background to join.

Hull International Photography Festival

5th October to 28th October 2018, from The Creative & Cultural Company

HIP Fest may well be the country’s biggest annual Photography festivals and it returns for a 5th year. Turning the city’s largest shopping mall into a cultural centre for the whole month, 12 major exhibitions in converted galleries will stand alongside the usual outfitters, boutiques and chains. It is this unique venue that helped account for  8600 visits to the festival last year.

PhotoCity come to Hull for the opening weekend, following on from their PhotoCity London exhibition & trade show close by St Paul's Cathedral. 

Partners Fujiholics & Redeye will be facilitating on the opening weekend, which will feature more workshops, masterclasses and photowalks than ever before. Making 50 events over the month.

This year HIP FEST supports Care International’s Lendwithcare Campaign and will have an exhibition from 5 international women photographers to raise awareness.

Wellcome launches £20,000 photography prize to showcase powerful stories about health

A new international photography prize celebrating compelling imagery that captures stories of health, medicine and science launches today. Wellcome Photography Prize invites photographers to enter their images which highlight the most challenging health issues of our time.

The overall winner of Wellcome Photography Prize will receive a £15,000 prize, with the winner of each of the four categories receiving £1,250. Prizes will be presented at an awards ceremony in London in summer 2019.

Winning entries will also be showcased in a public exhibition at Lethaby Gallery, Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London in July 2019. The shortlisted entries will be shown alongside a photo series commissioned by Wellcome, which will tell an in-depth story on the theme of ‘outbreaks’ from the perspective of a celebrated documentary photographer, to be announced later this year.

Prizes and publicity

Images will be shortlisted and then winners chosen by a panel of high-profile judges.

The winner of each category will receive £1,250, with the overall winner receiving a prize of £15,000. Prizes will be presented at an awards ceremony in London on 3 July 2019.

All the winning and shortlisted entries will go on show in a major public exhibition at Lethaby Gallery, Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, from 4-13 July 2019.

If you’re a winner, we will also offer you opportunities to take part in events to showcase your work to a range of audiences. Our winning images receive extensive international media coverage each year.

The winner of the Medicine in Focus category will be invited to produce the Julie Dorrington commission, a photo story exploring and documenting a patient’s journey with their condition.

Zine & Photobook Fair 2018

Join Zine-makers, publishers and photographers for a free all-day celebration of rare, hand made and self published books, journals and zines from the North West and beyond. The event will be held on Saturday 30 June from 11am – 4pm in the bright, covered Mann Island atrium space outside of the gallery. This will be a free event open to established publishers and enthusiasts alike and will be a great opportunity to meet with both local and established artists in the publishing community.

Photograd at PhotoEast 2018

A Photograd exhibition | Opening Thursday 24th May 2018 as part of PhotoEast

A selection of the Photograd community come together for PhotoEast 2018 to present work around the festival’s theme of Belonging | On display in the University of Suffolk’s Waterfront Building from 6pm Thursday 24th May - 6pm Sunday 24th June.

The Ipswich waterfront will be home to photographers who explore the theme of belonging in their work and Photograd featured graduates have come together to join in with the celebrations.

A collective of 12 photographers are representing Photograd and honouring the theme of Belonging at PhotoEast's second festival. Having been given one long wall in the universities Waterfront Building, Photograd have curated a varying sequence of work that is bound by these similar themes and attitudes. Differing print sizes entice the viewer to migrate through the space to view work at their own pace.

Each of the photographers in this exhibition have defined and secured the theme of Belonging in distinctive ways.

Norwich University of the Arts graduate Karim Skalli explores his identity and mixed cultural heritage though a series of photographs from which this image belongs. “As the son of an English mother and Moroccan father, the project attempts to show the coming together of cultures, the conflicts and juxtaposition created through merging English and Moroccan culture and the influence of this on my identity. The work ponders my western outsider gaze, my ‘cast on’ view of my father’s homeland whilst at the same time acknowledging my own sense of never being fully British.”

Newport University graduate Declan Connolly was part of the first Photograd exhibition in 2017 and continues to support, and be supported by, our community. “Becoming an Island addresses the themes of an isolated United Kingdom in the form of manipulated pebbles collected from its shores. Each image is a composite of a pebble photographed and re-photographed in various stages of physical erasure. Reflecting the audience's relationship with current Brexit negotiations, the work can be viewed as a series of coexisting and united objects or the immediate decline of a singular entity.”

Tom Owens studied at the University of Suffolk itself and graduated in 2014. Tom has continued to push his work since finishing his studies and presents here a new series, Estuarine Mud.

"This series is an extension of my successful Edgelands series. I repeatedly visit the same locations when making my work and it was a return visit to the source of my Edgelands project brought about by radical reshaping of the derelict factories at Cattawade to ready the site for a new railway depot that brought the creek at Cattawade into sharp focus. The series is shot from both sides of the Stour Estuary but only at dead low water on spring tides and with little or no wind. Most of the images are very early morning or just before sundown."

Argentea Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Gökhan Tanriöver’s Confessionals.

Comprising a series of black and white still life photographs, Confessionals is based on specific childhood experiences. Guided by Annette Kuhn’s process of ‘memory work’, a method and practice of unearthing and making public untold stories, Tanriöver’s personal memories are made tangible through the photograph. Each experience is first presented as a written confession from which an image is then constructed and the combination of image and text weaves a poignant autobiographical narrative.

This singularity of intent about the work, the public exposure of private experiences, is shown through the use of black and white. By removing the potential distraction of colour, Tanriöver has created images that are the embodiment of contrary forces. Black, being visually heavy and associated with power, authority and evil, is starkly contrasted with white, a colour that projects purity and salvation and is synonymous with new beginnings. Working with analogue, the studio and the darkroom are the physical space where Tanriöver’s meditative state acts as a form of autotherapy. This process has allowed him to produce images where these opposing forces of black and white don’t compete, but rather complement each other to communicate more effectively ideas of opposition and comparison, association and acceptance.

By offering his own emotional and psychological life as art, Tanriöver invites the viewer to share in his meditations on sorrow and remembrance.

Gokhan Tanriover is a Turkish-born photographic artist living in London. Following a brief medical career, he realised his vocation lay in visual culture. Drawing on his training as a junior psychiatrist his work consists of constructed imagery that focuses on personal and cultural identity informed by personal experience and memory.

After completing his BA (Hons) Photographic Art (2017) from the University of Westminster he has been shortlisted for the Peaches and Cream photography competition (2017) and selected as a finalist in the Royal Photographic Society International Photography Exhibition 160. His work has been included in 18 group exhibitions including Separation and Belonging that he co-curated as part of the Whitechapel Gallery’s First Thursday tour in May 2016. In 2017 he was chosen to participate in the Travers Smith CSR Art programme.

Event Report: Carina Ioannou at Firstsite

Introduction: I'm Carina and I'm currently studying BA Photography at University Centre Colchester, I will graduate in 2018. The main genres I enjoying exploring are documentary and portraiture. I feel responsible for documenting what we fail to see and I am quite prolific. For me, Martin Parr is a legend when it comes to documenting these ‘unseen sights’. A master at capturing everyday occurrences and delivering them in his unique satirical and deliberate style. I was extremely excited knowing that Parr would be coming to Colchester to exhibit Work and Leisure. He was one of the judges for the “Essence of Essex” competition, which ran alongside his exhibition. Further, on the final night, Parr was interviewed by the Firstsite gallery. It was unmissable; a chance to listen to Parr as he discussed his influences and opinions and his previous and current practices in photography.

I’ve always felt a pull towards art and photography but never thought it would be more than just a hobby. Not because I wasn't serious about it, but because it wasn't perceived as academic enough. I was always told how artistic I was but no one ever said: “You should pursue this.” 

From 2004 to 2013 I worked as a Police Officer. It’s the complete opposite of anything remotely artistic, but I see it from a different perspective. Dealing with emotions, beliefs, habits, life, pain and sometimes death, you see a side of humanity that not many get to witness: the inner human psyche. This is an advantage to the photographer. As I continue to study photography, refine my process and produce work I have used my experiences in the Police as an influence to create context and narrative. I have also learnt great skills of communication for different situations: whether it’s talking to clients, peers or communicating through your photographs.

Event: My 2nd year at university began with a project called Place. A broad and subjective title that linked in nicely with Parr’s recent talk at Firstsite and the style of photographs I want to produce. My goal is to be brave enough to capture the unpolished, slightly sarcastic and critical but with a sense of nostalgia. Parr stated during the interview: “It’s incredibly difficult to be a photographer, to find your voice.” I myself feel that I’m in a constant state of refinement but I have to trust my concepts. “If you just wait to only take good photos you’d never start because how would you know if anythings good?” says Parr.

Outcome: As we came to the questions and answers section of the talk I listened to the carefully constructed and clever questions put to him by the audience. I recalled his earlier response about his current practices, “Now you have a lot of people doing selfies. I’m doing a series of people and their selfie sticks…this is how we connect to the world out there. We've got to be seen…then you know you exist.” With this in mind the only possible question I could ask Parr was, “Can I take a selfie with you?” He laughed and happily obliged. Some may have seen it as crass and cliche but what makes it different is that it was intentional. A juxtaposition of two photographers documenting the modern idiosyncrasy of the selfie. Undoubtedly the best question of the night!

Future: In the immediate future I want to develop my process and strengthen my use of narrative. To do this I try to take photos everyday and critique them. I am constantly updating blogs and writing in my notebook. I want to find my style but at the same time I think it’s imperative to not rule anything out.
