"The colour of there seen from here, the colour of where you are not” - Rebecca Solnit.

A group exhibition of work by 8 contemporary artists explored through their use of the colour blue. These artists have had tremendous success in their careers to date; exhibiting across the world at prestigious events such as Frieze & Unseen, and feature in many international collections.

Due to Copeland Gallery’s generous sponsorship, this exhibition has been organised by Maddie Rose Hills without artist fees or commission in a genuine attempt champion the work without financial motive.

Production costs are being funded through Kickstarter with art and tickets to events for sale from £5-£400.

Tess Williams has had solo shows in Germany, Spain and the UK, and has been selected for numerous group exhibitions across Europe. Her work is held in collections in the UK, Europe and the USA.

Tom Pope this year took his performance piece One Square Club to Frieze LA. Graduated with an MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art in 2011. Upon graduating he won the Deutsche Bank Artist Award.

Florence Sweeney’s work is in international collections. She’s recently exhibited with Guts Gallery, Espositivo Madrid, SWAB Art Fair Barcelona, The Dot Project London & a solo show at Lily Brooke Gallery, London.

Alexander Mourant’s work has been included in FT Weekend Magazine, British Journal of Photography, Photograph, Unseen Magazine and The Greatest Magazine. He has won the Free Range Award and was recently nominated for Foam Paul Huf Award.

Maddie Rose Hills has exhibited in London, Paris & Barcelona with an artist residency in Iceland. Her paintings have been acquired by the British Airways collection. Commissions include The Dorchester’s 45 Park Lane.

Simone Mudde is a 2019 New Contemporaries artist. Exhibitions with The Photographers Gallery & Unseen Amsterdam. Recipient of RCA New Photographers Prize and shortlisted for European Photography Award.

Katrina Russell-Adams graduated with a degree in Behavioural Sciences. With a successful career in social housing under her belt she took a break to bring up 3 children before coming to art. Artist commissions include ITV and London Borough of Culture.

Matilda Little is a graduate of Central St Martins, her work work directs the viewers attention to the idea of the ‘object’ and questions the object’s status, and in turn our hierarchy of values.

Artist Talk | On Blue and Photography
£5 on Kickstarter: By utilising the colour blue as a trigger point, artists Tom Pope, Simone Mudde and Alexander Mourant, will explore their approach to medium, practice and a sense of being in the world. We are thrilled that Duncan Wooldridge will be joining us in the gallery to chair the talk. Duncan is an artist, writer and curator. He is Course Director for Fine Art Photography at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London. He writes regularly for 1000 Words, Artforum, Art Monthly, and Foam. His curatorial projects include 'Anti-Photography' (2011), 'John Hilliard: Not Black and White' (2014), and 'Moving The Image: Photography and its Actions' (2019). The Full Picture: The stories behind the photographs - A Kickstarter Campaign

A photo book where photographers choose one of their own images and reveal the story behind their chosen image - managed and curated by Tom Carpenter, founder of LeftaBit.

My name is Tom Carpenter and I curate a blog called LeftaBit. I have recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for a project called The Full Picture. The idea for The Full Picture came about when listening a photographer speak at an event in London in 2015. This particular photographer told such incredible stories, not necessarily about the image itself, but instead she told the backstories to how the images came about.

After that event I was intrigued to find out if other photographers had similar stories behind their photographs. As the stories came through from the photographers, some of the stories made me laugh others made me question how they had made it to the point of getting the image at all. One thing that stood out to me with the stories was that a lot of the photographers had had to come through some sort of adversity and at times fear or crippling self doubt to capture that final image.  

This is something that really resonated with me, because I think we’ve all been in a position where you are in a unfamiliar place with a camera in your hands and you are having an internal battle, what am I doing here, why do I need to get this photo and who else actually cares. We compound these thoughts afterwards by going onto social media and spending hours looking at other people’s so called perfect lives or perfect photographs, and in turn piling more and more pressure onto ourselves.

The Full Picture for me highlighted in a way that the photographers I admire most also have those days where nothing seems to go as planned, where they are in a situation where fear of self doubt has them questioning what they do. This project highlights that in a small way, but it also shows that with perseverance and hard work you can get that one shot that makes it all worth while.

My name is Lucy Jane Saunders and I am a Bath Spa University Photography graduate. I started photography years before going to university as a hobby, inspired by the disposable film camera images my dad would bring home and develop after his travels abroad. I never anticipated it could become my job, yet it slowly immersed me into the world of photography and its potentials. At university my style narrowed and I found my preferred way of working. Photographers such as Jon Tonks, Colin Pantell and Robert Darch inspired my documentary approach to photographing. Yet being outdoors, travelling, and finding new locations really motivated me to keep making new work. 

After graduating two years ago I started freelancing alongside setting up the magazine publication ‘Flourish’. I have always adored working within print production and love magazine design. I initially created it out of pure passion, the desire to create new work, and design pages where photographs and text interacted on the page telling stories. But once the first volume was made I almost felt selfish keeping it to myself… the stories I had encountered travelling, the archive of photographs I had collected and the other people I collaborated with. I decided to launch a Kickstarter Campaign to see if other creatives would be interested in supporting the publication to get the magazine to print. To my surprise we achieved our target! People from all over the world backed the campaign and three months later we had enough funding to get the magazine to the printers. I sat in the post office for hours posting a host of magazines to backers and from there I tried to gain stockists to hold the rest.

Flourish became a brand rooted from its definition: “(of a living organism) grow or develop in a healthy or vigorous way, especially as the result of a particularly congenial environment.” As humans we are constantly seeking new, intriguing, and stimulating locations to explore, travel, and experience. Flourish aims to capture those moments we treasure; the bright colours, the tastes we remember, and most importantly the time spent thriving within that place. 

I wanted to capture not only the sensual elements of a location, but also its underlying struggles, and those who have met and overcome the challenges of sustainability. Those who live from the land, create from the land, and are protecting and flourishing with the nature that surrounds them.  

In recent years, photographic magazines have been blurring the lines between books and throwaway publications. Flourish is a magazine with stability, acting as a visual map for your mind, a great piece of reading material for your rucksack, and some inspiration to enjoy with your morning coffee. 


Flourish will remind you that life is an experience, to capture those moments from other lives you cross paths with, to think more about what surrounds us in the landscapes you gaze at, and to speculate more on your next adventure.

Over the past year Flourish has thrived and I started to stock the publication in more and more independent stores. Due to the unexpected work I had to start bringing people on board and the Flourish team started to grow. My amazing supportive family started to help me get a website together, social media sites, help package, proof read and blog. It almost became a full time job for myself. 

My biggest achievement for the publication so far was definitely an unexpected win at the Creative Bath Awards in the summer of 2018. Winning Young Creative was an outstanding achievement for myself and for the magazine team. As we went from strength to strength I found the need to make more work and I was conscious people would be expecting a second volume. Depleted of money with the print of volume 1 and the lack of freelance work I could do, I find myself back in the same position as I was in with volume 1…. It’s never easy setting up a business and the profit from print is minimal, at least for the first couple of volumes. I have set up another Kickstarter to support volume 2 titled A Snippet of The British Isles where we collaborate with more photographers, writers and illustrators than we did previously in volume 1. 

Our Kickstarter Campaign is now in its last 30 days, so we are currently half way through. We are really close to making our target to get the publication to print and we would love the support of fellow photographers, creatives, and others who are passionate about the subject of Travel, Culture, Sustainability and Outdoor Living. Our campaign acts as a pre-ordering service…. where you can pre-order volume 2 A Snippet of The British Isles but also the possibility of gaining other rewards such a one off prints, illustrations and getting your name within the volume.

I am always on the look out for new photographers to feature within the publication. I love collaborating and love working with other graduates and fresh graduates as I was once in this position myself. I am always on the look out for something unique… someone who can create innovate stories through their pictures and who are enthusiastic about their work! 

Huw Alden Davies. 'Scaffold to the Moon' - A Photobook

We couldn't help but jump on board when Newport, University of Wales MA graduate Huw Alden Davies announced a Kickstarter campaign for his brand new book, Scaffold to the Moon.

Huw has been kind enough to keep us updated with the progress of his campaign and we really wanted to bring you more of an insight on launch day. Tell us about your work. What's this series about? To begin with Prince was simply a project between projects, to keep me photographing while occupied with the development of my teaching practice. Little did I know that it would soon became my most defining project thus far, leading me on a path to self discovery. This is an age-old story of boy to man; father and son; fools and heros; told, I like to think from a relative but fresh perspective. With the focus of much of my practice centered on Tumble (my home village), it is only natural that my attention would shift to one of its biggest characters, and that character just so happens to be my dad.

How has this work evolved to be at the stage you are now? Rewind two years, 2015, with Prince (my first publication) in the final stages of production, I was asked by Ffotogallery if I would contribute to an online IG artist residency as part of the Diffusion Festival, and bang that was it. Locked in a transatlantic to-and-fro with Detroit Photographer, Patricia Lay Dorsey, something new happened. A voice that had been exercised, I assume during my writings for Prince begun to take a hold, and with the encouragement I received from both Dorsey and my peers, this was soon a voice that would not quiet.

Now, nearly 40,000 words later, almost ten thousand views on Prince Street (blog), numerous international festivals and exhibitions, and a prize winner in this years ESPY Photo Award Book Prize, it is only fitting that my most obsessive and all consuming body of work be concluded in a complete collection, entitled Scaffold to the Moon, which will contain an assembly of illustrations, photographs and writings that celebrate the man that should have once been my role model.

What encouraged you to turn to crowdfunding for support? For me at this stage in my photographic career, this seems like the most obvious direction. Throughout the years I have had a massive amount of support from the Arts Council of Wales, and I have always tried to fund as much as I can myself, but with a project of this size and nature neither is an option. Self Publishing can be a very expensive game, in an unpredictable market with no guaranteed success.

Therefore, although it’s not everyone’s first choice, Crowd-funding for me provides a certain level of security based on pre-sales. Here I will have the opportunity to sell a percentage of my book before it is even made, which will provide the funds to make it, it just makes more sense. On the flip side, it might not reach the finish line. That’s said, if does not get funded it does not get made. Everyone walks away with no debt, with a slight exception of your pride and reputation, of course.  

However, I am confident in my work. Besides the hundreds of hours that have gone into the production, I have invested a significant amount of time and effort in promoting and exhibiting the work, which has gained a lot of support, publicity and interest. I am positive that I have a solid plan, I know what I am going to do, and I know how much it’s going to cost to do it. I have a good understanding of my market, and I believe I have something that people will be interested in, although, as with anything there are no absolutes, at least beyond my dedication. I am however, working with the right team of people to make this happen. With that said, once I have launched the Kickstarter, it’s all beyond our control and all I can do is hope that people want what I have to offer.

Tell us about some of your Kickstarter rewards and what supporters can expect from donating. During the last few months I have conducted a large degree of research, speaking to some of the industries most experienced practitioners to ensure that I have covered every angle and that each backer feels part of the project, and although Scaffold to the Moon will be the main focus there will be a variety of rewards available to suit a range of interests. These will include early bird rewards, double book rewards, book and print packages, and a collector edition. I also appreciate, that some might want to support the project without any financial impact; all support is vital to the success of the campaign, so I have tailored smaller and more affordable rewards for those who want to help me make this publication happen. These will include signed copies of Prince my first publication, or video rewards and regular exclusive material straight to their inbox.

Who inspires you the most? Many have inspired my direction and many continue to do so, too many to list here. However, if we were to discuss bookmakers, my immediate response would be Clare Richardson, she was the first who inspired my intention towards bookmaking and the narratives offered by this medium. Although, looking at some of the leading modern examples of self-publishing, I am very much smitten by Jack Latham and Michal Iwanawski’s recent contributions to the world of Photobooks, there is a lot going on right now on this side of photography, and I am excited by the prospect bringing Prince’s world to this new wave.   

What's your ultimate goal for the future of your work? If I told you… I would have to make a book about it!

Although, I can say having crossed mediums more than once or twice in recent years, I feel the future is a multi-media one, but who knows. The one thing I do know is that it will be visual and it will involve a lot more of Tumble. But for now, it’s all about Prince and getting him to the page.

Have you got any tips or advice? For what it's worth, if I was to give any advice I would probably say, If you want to do something to the best of your ability I have learned to ask those who have done it best. Open up to other views and criticism and talk to as many practitioners as possible; ask for their advice, for they have made all the mistakes that you are likely to make. They will know the pitfalls, they will also see the best and worst in you and your work, to which you will likely be blind.  

If you are going to do something, I was taught to do it to the best of your ability, so if it is close to your heart then take your time with it, keep working things until you are confident that you have got it right. Better to kick yourself trying, than kick yourself for not giving it your all.

Photograd Experience: Charlotte and Georgia Bennett at Gallery Six

We’re Charlotte and Georgia, photographers from the South East of England. We recently graduated from the University of East London where we studied photography. We are twins who work collaboratively on documentary style photographs and films, we then use these themes together to depict the stories of peoples lives, places and important issues, recording them in an intimate way. We love creating projects that have a social impact and that people can learn from.

Our current project Made Strong follows our friend Michelle and her story dealing with Multiple Sclerosis. Made Strong originally started as a university project but a year later we are still working together along with the MS Society and the MS Trust to help raise awareness. 

We first heard about Gallery Six online through Twitter and applied straight away. We exhibited at Free Range with our university so spent the whole summer at the Old Trewman Brewery and loved the atmosphere around the place.

We both studied and lived in East London so it’s great to be working here now too; it’s the creative hub of London, full of interesting people. The space itself is in a location where you get inspired just looking out the windows or walking to get your lunch on your break. The only con was not being able to get there as much as we’d like. That’s something that every creative has to deal with, balancing your normal job with what you love.

We use the space to mainly work on Made Strong; it's great to have somewhere to go and solidly work on our project without any distractions, and also to be surrounded by likeminded creatives is amazing. It's led to a group of us now working together creating a zine, something that is really exciting and brings us together even when our time runs out at the gallery.

We both think that Gallery Six pushed Made Strong forward. Being in a creative environment surrounded by other creatives has encouraged is to do more, to experiment further and really work hard. We both have a really bad habit of being unorganised but when we work at Gallery Six everything seems to get done quicker and so we were always on top of things. 

2017 has started well for us, our video got featured by MS Trust and has had nearly 3,000 views! We’re now organising our first solo exhibition which is exciting and nerve-racking at the same time. Made Strong is our main focus before we start any other project, the next step is to travel around the UK to interview other young people who have been diagnosed with MS and following their stories. Although we are both photographers, we have been filming a lot recently, it was a natural progression and something that we have wanted to do for a while. A lot of the people following Made Strong through our social media channels are from all over the world, so to put up work that is easily accessible for them to see is our main goal for this year.
