ABOUT

Issue 10 will be our first themed edition, and we’re kicking off with the weighty topic of national identity. In the glare of recent events, we want discussion around the topic, from all sides.

We’re looking for projects that explore citizens’ relationship to their country, both positive and negative. You might have photographed, white supremacists in America, a border dispute, Brexit in the UK, or your own feelings towards your home country.

Despite the hefty title we are looking for work on a macro and micro scale; you might have spent years documenting a whole country or only days with an individual. The work can be heartbreaking or humorous – so long as it’s an engaging and well executed body of work.

HOW TO SUBMIT

PHOTOGRAPHY 

We are looking for work from all genres of photography, be it fine art, documentary, fashion or commercial. There are no limits; as long as the work connects with our theme of national identity we want to see it. Send either a link to the project on your website or up to 10 web rez jpegs and a short project statement to submissions@loupemag.com.

Please note we cannot accept any form of file sharing link, so make sure your images are small enough to attach to a single email.

BOOK DUMMY SUBMISSION 

If you would like to submit, please send a PDF of your book dummy to submissions@loupemag.com. Please note if you are selected to be featured you will need to send a physical dummy to us. Copies will be returned, although if you live outside of the EU and the dummy is large / heavy we may ask you to make a contribution to the cost.

WRITERS

2019 photography graduates - an open call

Photograd are looking to reward and represent a number of 2019 photography graduates who have studied on BA and MA courses in the UK.


BA graduates

  • 2 graduates will be rewarded with an interview on Photograd which will be promoted across social media channels, newsletter, and to connections in the industry.

  • 1 graduate will be rewarded with an extended Instagram takeover from Monday 15th to Sunday 21st July 2019.

  • 1 graduate will be represented by Photograd for a year. This will include Photograd coverage of any new work, exhibitions, or book releases. Use of the Photograd blog and Instagram account where relevant, and introductions to connections within the industry. We will discuss with this graduate ways in which we can represent and support them.

MA graduates

  • 10 graduates will be selected as ‘highly commended’ and will have work presented on Photograd. This work will be promoted across social media channels, newsletter, and to connections in the industry.

  • 1 graduate will be rewarded with an extended Instagram takeover. This can be scheduled for a later date to suit the graduate.

All successful graduates will be added to the Photograd mailing list and will be sent an exclusive discount code for the online shop.


Eligibility and terms & conditions

  • Open to 2019 photography graduates who studied in the UK only, either on a BA or MA course. Please email with any questions.

  • Entries will only be accepted via photograd2019@gmail.com by the deadline given. No late submissions will be accepted.

  • Make it clear in your submission email if you do not want to be considered for any of the rewards listed above.

  • Copyright of all images submitted will be owned by the photographer.

  • Photograd retains the right to use selected images for the intended purpose of the website, and related social media accounts for promotion. Credit will always be given.

Things to include when making your entry

  • University and course.

  • A 200 word max series statement.

  • BA graduates: a short paragraph telling us why you would like to be represented by Photograd. (Your plans, goals, and things you’d like to achieve within the next year and in the future. Things you have set in place for the next year, and how you think Photograd could support you but not in a financial sense.)

  • 10 - 15 images attached to the email at 10 inches on the longest side at 96dpi. Download links such as wetransfer will not be accepted. Links to websites will also not be accepted.

  • Website and social media handles.


Submissions are free as always but donations are greatly appreciated. Making a donation will not affect how work is seen, selected, or promoted by Photograd.

NEXT EDITION OF PHOTO SCRATCH - APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN

We welcome applications from working documentary photographers and photojournalists. The only criteria for showing work is that it is documentary in nature, and that you are a professional photographer, not currently in full time education, working in the pictures based industries. 

Applications should be made via this online form.

You will be asked to include in your application:

  • A brief description of your project (no more than 200 words)

  • What you hope to gain from doing Photo Scratch – are there particular issues or questions you are encountering to do with your project?

  • A selection of low res jpegs from the proposed project (no more than 5 pictures, no more than 800kb each in file size)

  • Any information you have about how you would want to display the work (prints, contact sheets, projection, etc.)

  • Two links to where your work has been published or shared other than your own website. This should not be the work you are applying with.


Application time line:

  • Deadline: 5pm Wednesday 22nd May 2019

  • Notification of participation - by Monday 27th May 2019

  • Photo Scratch event - Wednesday 12th June 2019 at The Royal Photographic Society, Bristol 


Please note:

  • Photo Scratch is for work-in-progress only.

  • Photo Scratch is predominantly focused on documentary photography and photojournalism, though projects that reach into the art side of things are also welcome if they are rooted in documentary. Challenging the form is always encouraged.

  • There is no fee to apply or participate, but you are responsible for your own costs associated with participating (transport, prints etc.)

  • Photo Scratch is specifically for photographers who are not currently studying.

A visual response to Brexit - the 3rd edition of PGZ

Submissions are now open to the third edition of PGZ. In this Brexit themed issue, photographers will reflect upon the current UK climate amidst our recent decision to leave the European Union.

We are looking for single images, bodies of work, and written pieces around the topic. Whether positive or negative, we are hopeful we can collate a reflection of the UK at this important, but also quite uncertain time. We’ve all felt the impact and our futures remain unpredictable. We are all in a huge state of change.

Previous editions of PGZ have been printed and saddle stitched, and we’ve sent these out to big names in the industry. This time around we’re creating a downloadable zine which we are hopeful can reach a wider audience. This also means we can include more photographers and spend less time on print quality and more time on promotion.

We’re excited to see where this project will lead.


We will also be selecting work from submissions received for website content based around this theme. If you’d like to be considered for website content only and not this edition of PGZ please state this in your email. There is no fee for website only content.

Submission guidelines

  • Submissions are free and open to photography graduates from UK courses only. No specific graduation year

  • A number of graduates will be selected from submissions received and will need to pay a small fee of £15 each

  • A maximum of 10 images need to be sent alongside your series title, website link, social media handles, and where you studied

Winning photographers: please note that not all 10 of your images will be selected, we will edit them down so if you have any preferences please state these in your initial email.

Selected images will be curated at the discretion of Photograd.

Wellcome launches £20,000 photography prize to showcase powerful stories about health

A new international photography prize celebrating compelling imagery that captures stories of health, medicine and science launches today. Wellcome Photography Prize invites photographers to enter their images which highlight the most challenging health issues of our time.

The overall winner of Wellcome Photography Prize will receive a £15,000 prize, with the winner of each of the four categories receiving £1,250. Prizes will be presented at an awards ceremony in London in summer 2019.

Winning entries will also be showcased in a public exhibition at Lethaby Gallery, Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London in July 2019. The shortlisted entries will be shown alongside a photo series commissioned by Wellcome, which will tell an in-depth story on the theme of ‘outbreaks’ from the perspective of a celebrated documentary photographer, to be announced later this year.

Prizes and publicity

Images will be shortlisted and then winners chosen by a panel of high-profile judges.

The winner of each category will receive £1,250, with the overall winner receiving a prize of £15,000. Prizes will be presented at an awards ceremony in London on 3 July 2019.

All the winning and shortlisted entries will go on show in a major public exhibition at Lethaby Gallery, Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, from 4-13 July 2019.

If you’re a winner, we will also offer you opportunities to take part in events to showcase your work to a range of audiences. Our winning images receive extensive international media coverage each year.

The winner of the Medicine in Focus category will be invited to produce the Julie Dorrington commission, a photo story exploring and documenting a patient’s journey with their condition.

Entries to the Wellcome Photography Prize 2019 will be accepted on its website which contains full terms and conditions for entry. The deadline for entries is 17 December 2018.

A London Photograd exhibition

In November Photograd will be exhibiting at London Metropolitan University to celebrate graduate photography in 2018. The exhibition will be listed as part of Photomonth which is exciting.

We will be printing on Kodak Phototex as previous use of this was successful and it means we can reuse prints for future Photograd exhibitions. Phototex is basically a weatherproof sticky paper that can be used a number of times.

Costs for prints

  • 20" print: £32

  • 30" print: £47

  • 40" print: £62

  • 50" print: £77

  • 60" print: £92

  • 70" print: £107

  • 80" print: £122

The maximum width we can print is 42"

The space is big enough to accommodate large prints and small series of work.

We would also really like to accommodate some photobooks and zines in the space so please send images and sizes for consideration. If books are selected we would only ask for a small donation to Photograd and that return postage costs are covered.

  • Please ensure that you graduated a UK university within the last 3 years and studied photography - any questions regarding this please get in touch

  • Max 6 images - please specify how many images you are happy to pay for and be printed

  • Use the subject 'London exhibition'

Submissions open for third annual Rebecca Vassie Memorial Award, photography bursary worth more than £3,000

Who can apply: An early-to-mid-career photographer in or from the UK

The award: £2,000 to undertake a narrative photography project with a social or political context; approx. £1,000-worth of printing at Metro Imaging; support from the Trust towards public and industry exposure of the work; membership of Shutter Hub.

The Rebecca Vassie Trust today announces the third annual Rebecca Vassie Memorial Award for emerging photographers ‒ with the cash bursary increasing this year from £1,250 to £2,000.

In addition to the cash, which funds an early-career photographer in the UK to undertake a narrative photography project, the winner receives more than £1,000-worth of printing at Metro Imaging plus support towards industry and public exposure.

Judges for the award include Matthew Tucker (BBC News), Melanie Hough, curator at Getty Images, and photography critic Jennifer Thatcher (Art Monthly, ARTnews).

The award was created in memory of Rebecca Vassie, a British photographer and photojournalist who died suddenly, aged 30, while on assignment in Uganda in March 2015.

Applicants for the award, who must be either from or based in the UK, are asked to submit a proposal setting out a compelling vision for a narrative photography project with a social or political context. The deadline for submissions is Friday, 19 October 2018.

Previous awards have been won by James Arthur Allen (2017) and Kirsty Mackay (2018). Allen used his award to travel to Israel, where he spent time documenting the little-known ethnic Circassian population. The resulting work has been exhibited in London, published in a limited-edition booklet and in the Calvert Journal, and shortlisted for the RPS International Photography Exhibition 161 and the 2018 Kolga Tbilisi Photo Festival Documentary Series Award.

Mackay is currently in Glasgow completing her award-winning project The Fish That Never Swam, exploring the relationship between health, housing and human lives in the city.

In addition to the main winner, the Trust offers shortlisted candidates support-inkind such as networking opportunities and online exhibition. The winner and up to two runners-up also receive membership of Shutter Hub.

Kelly Vassie, a trustee of the charity and the sister of Rebecca, said: “We have been able to increase the cash portion of the award this year thanks to the fundraising efforts and generosity of our supporters. We especially want to acknowledge the incredible effort of our 2018 London Marathon charity runner Rebecca Moore.

“As we enter the third year of the award, we’re hugely excited to see a fresh wave of compelling ideas.”

Join Zine-makers, publishers and photographers for a free all-day celebration of rare, hand made and self published books, journals and zines from the North West and beyond. The event will be held on Saturday 30 June from 11am – 4pm in the bright, covered Mann Island atrium space outside of the gallery. This will be a free event open to established publishers and enthusiasts alike and will be a great opportunity to meet with both local and established artists in the publishing community.

Ginnel Foto Fest 2018 Open Call

The 2018 call by the Ginnel Foto Fest invites photographers to submit single Photographs or a series of maximum four images interpreting this year's theme 'BorderLands'.

All details can be found on the website, www.ginnelfoto.com . This year's prizes are kindly sponsored by Intrepid Camera Co., COES, Frameworkshop and Snappy Snaps Ipswich. Deadline for entries is April 15th. The Ginnel Foto Fest happens on May 26 & 27th and is supported by Suffolk County Council and Ipswich Borough Council.

We're calling for work with Loupe Magazine!

Loupe Magazine and Photograd come together to celebrate outstanding photographic talent. We're seeking a series of work from one photography graduate to reward with a feature in Loupe Magazine issue 7 (due for release Summer 2018), 2 tickets to Photo London and years subscription to their Academy, and a feature on the Photograd Spotlight. Three runners-up will be showcased on the Photograd blog.

The theme is open and the submission process is free. Entries close midnight Saturday 31st March 2018.

To enter, email your chosen series of work saved as JPG's alongside a series statement to loupexphotograd@gmail.com using 'Photograd X Loupe' as the subject.

Revolv - An Open Call

 

Revolv turns 1 year this month and we are looking for single image submissions to celebrate innovative photography by emerging talents. The call is free to enter and open to early-career and self-taught photographers, graduates and anyone currently studying on a BA/MA course, or equivalent. We welcome submissions from artists already featured by Revolv, as well as new faces. Applications can be submitted from anywhere in the world, but must be in English. There is no specific theme, however the images must be suited to be shown in a public space. The final deadline of the competition is the 1st of February 2018. The selected artists would be asked to pay a small fee (up to £15).

How to enter:
– One JPEG, maximum 5 MB
– Title and contextual information in relation to the image in a doc or pdf file
– Short biography in doc or pdf file, maximum 150 words
– A link to the artist’s portfolio/website
– Title the submission email ‘’One Year Submission‘’ and send to revolvcollective@gmail.com

If you submit later than 12:00 pm (GMT) on the 1st of February 2018, in size or format different from the above requirements, your submission won’t be taken into consideration. Details regarding the pop-up show for the winning photographers to be announced soon.
