This Brexit edition of PGZ supports a number of photography graduates who studied in the UK. These photographers have been given the opportunity to showcase work made around the theme of Brexit under the current climate in the UK. Select photographers have been interviewed by professionals within the industry for this zine.

With a wide array of subject matter, this publication brings to the forefront current situations and opinions across the UK amidst our controversial decision to leave the European Union. Both positive and negative stories presented here give readers the opportunity to consider and reflect, make changes and move forward.

Photograd has plans to release a second volume of this Brexit zine later in 2019 with a possible printed edition to follow.

SEMIMAGAZINE Issue 1 * ALPHA *

Semi Magazine is a non-profit, independently published online and annual print magazine championing new voices within the global art community. Work featured in Semi Magazine often comments, acknowledges and questions current and past sociology. We feature artwork deemed topical or important in some way or work which has openly been worked on with passion and vigour. Semi Magazine was established in late 2017 and is funded entirely by its own revenue and, lovingly, by its founders.

Semi Magazine Issue 1 * ALPHA *  consists of 160 pages of artistic narrative and exploration on a few important topics within sociology and global society. In this issue we explore intuition, anticipation, commodity, tradition, imperfection, skaters, women and politics influencing sociology.

A visual response to Brexit - the 3rd edition of PGZ

Submissions are now open to the third edition of PGZ. In this Brexit themed issue, photographers will reflect upon the current UK climate amidst our recent decision to leave the European Union.

We are looking for single images, bodies of work, and written pieces around the topic. Whether positive or negative, we are hopeful we can collate a reflection of the UK at this important, but also quite uncertain time. We’ve all felt the impact and our futures remain unpredictable. We are all in a huge state of change.

Previous editions of PGZ have been printed and saddle stitched, and we’ve sent these out to big names in the industry. This time around we’re creating a downloadable zine which we are hopeful can reach a wider audience. This also means we can include more photographers and spend less time on print quality and more time on promotion.

We’re excited to see where this project will lead.


We will also be selecting work from submissions received for website content based around this theme. If you’d like to be considered for website content only and not this edition of PGZ please state this in your email. There is no fee for website only content.

Submission guidelines

  • Submissions are free and open to photography graduates from UK courses only. No specific graduation year

  • A number of graduates will be selected from submissions received and will need to pay a small fee of £15 each

  • A maximum of 10 images need to be sent alongside your series title, website link, social media handles, and where you studied

Winning photographers: please note that not all 10 of your images will be selected, we will edit them down so if you have any preferences please state these in your initial email.

Selected images will be curated at the discretion of Photograd.

Submissions need to be sent to photogradpgz@gmail.com only.

PGZ2018 | The second edition of Photograd's zine

Introducing the second edition of Photograd's zine, PGZ2018 | Celebrating those photographers who are graduating university this year from UK based courses. Available to purchase in the Photograd online shop, PGZ2018 praises brand new photographic talent.

This year we are promoting 2018 photography graduates from UK based courses in various ways; interviews, sharing of work, and aiming to reach a much wider audience. With support from Spectrum Photographic on this particular project we have been able to showcase new graduates through the second edition of PGZ. Here we introduce you to PGZ2018.

This summer we received entries from new photography graduates and we're celebrating this talent through the second edition of PGZ. PGZ2018 showcases work from 11 photographers from various universities across the UK including University of the Arts London, University of Salford, and The University of the West of England.

From calling for work, receiving more submissions than ever before, to the final judging process with the help of Hazel Watts of Spectrum Photographic, we have been presented with a much wider variety of photography that's new to the scene this year. We're starting to notice trends in research, subject matter, and outcome, and we're excited to bring you an array of this to you through PGZ2018.

University of the Arts London graduate Joanna Wierzbicka presents her series The Point Where We Meet which we've also featured as the cover image.

"The point where we meet is a surface forming a common line between two bodies, spaces, layers. Fashion becomes the translation of persona, appears as a boundary between us and others, almost like a mask or a second skin. It makes us feel comfortable and confident, allows to create the image of the self and coincide with others.
Garments perform the function of masking and wrapping - they deform and deconstruct the human form, but also in some cases fail and reveal the natural shape of the body, its pure, naked form. They conceal and reveal at the same time, causing the coexistence between absence and presence allowing surfaces to meet.
Within this series, there are also elements of an embodiment, disembodiment, and the awareness of bodily sensations achieved through the tactility of clothing."

MFA Photography graduate from the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, Natalie Paetzold introduces us to Finding the Void.

"Finding the Void is rooted in the desire to free one‘s head from one’s thoughts through the rhythm of walking within a nature setting. Placing one step in front of another helps to clear one‘s mind due to the ongoing act of repetition. The body of work is an investigation into meditation and landscape. Through the use of digitally reconstructed photography the work explores an immersion into both land and seascapes, creating a conscious state of being. Both surroundings allow contemplation through different visual experiences; being an active practitioner or being an observer. The ambiguous spheres create an awareness of the indexical nature of the photograph and blend the past, present and future together. Through walking, wandering, thinking and looking these strikingly coloured images reflect on ideas of phenomenology and perception, whilst also considering the possibilities of parallel worlds."

University of East London graduate Jay Goodsell presents his series Portus Dubris.

"Portus Dubris which derives from the towns roman beginnings, is a body of work that explores Dovers landscapes, not only is it undergoing major structural changes, the town still hangs within the unknown when the UK leaves the European Union. It’s often a forgotton place, and recently receiving a lot of negative press. The small but vital town to the country was voted at number one as the ‘worst place to live within the UK’. Dover is the entry point for many visiting guests from the continent, which left the question, what is so bad about the town to be voted number one?"

Join Zine-makers, publishers and photographers for a free all-day celebration of rare, hand made and self published books, journals and zines from the North West and beyond. The event will be held on Saturday 30 June from 11am – 4pm in the bright, covered Mann Island atrium space outside of the gallery. This will be a free event open to established publishers and enthusiasts alike and will be a great opportunity to meet with both local and established artists in the publishing community.

To submit, or for more information, get in touch by emailing charlotte.t@openeye.org.uk with “Submission Zine & Photobook Fair” in the email subject. Please make sure to include a PDF of your publication along with a brief text for each book/print including:

PGZ129 | The brand new zine from Photograd

Introducing the first edition of the brand new zine from Photograd | PGZ129 celebrates the first 2 years of the platform. Available to purchase from the Photograd online shop, PGZ129 comes together to celebrate 129 featured graduates.

PGZ129 is the first self-published zine from Photograd and presents readers with 12 photography graduates from UK based courses who continue to receive support. 

In April 2018 Photograd reached the grand old age of 2. In celebration of this PGZ is the brand new self-published zine from Photograd, bringing you a selection of some of our very best.

“129”, the title for this edition, represents the number of graduates we’ve had the privilege to feature on the site at some point during our first 2 years. In total, we’re supporting over 400 photographers in many different ways.

PGZ129 showcases work from photographers who studied at Plymouth College of Art, Falmouth University, and University of Brighton.

 
 

The University of the West of England, Bristol graduate Alex Ingram presents a new body of work titled The Gatekeepers.

“Scattered across the small islands surrounding the UK live loan rangers, spending their lives in quiet solidarity, away from the crowded, overpopulated landscapes of our urban world. Their role: to maintain and manage the preservation of their islands natural beauty and wildlife for future generations, whilst conducting research into these incredibly delicate ecosystems.

With limited access to the mainland during the winter months, no fresh running water, and under constant attack from harsh storms and perilous currents that can see them marooned for weeks at a time, it is not a role many are suited for. 

What is it like living so close to the mainland, but yet so far removed from social norms? How do they cope when the currents are too strong to make it back over for fresh food and supplies? What is it like living without the modern day technologies that we take for granted? And how do they adapt and overcome these daily obstacles with limited human contact? 

Over the next two years, these are the questions I want to explore. I will be visiting these remote islands and spending time with the rangers that have chosen to spend their lives there, in the hopes of better understanding what life is like living in some of the most beautiful, yet inhospitable landscapes in the UK.

In a world that is changing at a rapid pace, I want to question how this simplistic way of life fits within our modern world.”

Andreea Teleaga who studied at the University of Sunderland also presents a new body of work titled Violence Is A New Kind of Instinct; Between Light and Darkness.

A series of five 12in x16in black and white silver prints created from negatives destroyed with a nail and a hammer. Being an artist originally from a former-communist country, Romania, I am constantly looking at what it means to have gaps in the historical truth, reason why this series depicts the battle between knowing and not knowing, the light and the dark.

Chris Mear: 'Coalville Photographed' video

As you hopefully remember, we followed Staffordshire University graduate Chris Mear through his journey of releasing Coalville Photographed into the world. We helped Chris release a new video every fortnight to coincide with the zine he later produced to complete the body of work; you can find out more about the series and watch the videos via Chris' Photograd Spotlight.

Last year I released a series of short films on this blog. Made over the course of 15 months, they observed an amateur photographer and carer, called Graham, as he moved through the post-industrial landscape of North West Leicestershire every other Thursday morning. Shortly after releasing the final film I published a limited edition zine combining these films with a series of photographs made by both myself and Graham.

The remaining copies of Coalville Photographed are now exclusively available from DegreeArt.com. And to celebrate this I thought I’d offer you a short preview of the zine alongside a few of my favourite outtakes.

Unfortunately Chris' video series has come to an end. We've really enjoyed sharing the new episode every fortnight and we're now really excited to get to work creating a Spotlight to showcase his accompanying zine. The Charnwood Hills are too striking a feature to be passed over without especial notice. When seen obscurely they appear like an extensive range of mountains, much larger than they really are. When approached, the mountain style is still preserved, the prominences are sharp, distinct, and most of them pointed with rugged rocks. One of these prominences, Bardon Hill, rises above the rest: and though far from an elevated situation, it probably commands a greater extent of surface than any other point of view on the island. It is entirely insulated, standing, in every way, at a considerable distance from lands equally high. The horizon appears to rise almost equally on every side: it is quite an ocean view, from a ship out of sight of land. The midland district, almost every acre of it, is seen lying at its feet. The Sugar Loaf, in South Wales—the mountains of Shropshire and North Wales are distinctly in view—and the Derbyshire hills, to the highest peak, appear at hand. An outline, described from the extremity of this view, would include nearly one-fourth of England and Wales. It may be deemed one of the most extraordinary points of view in nature.

In the days before this shoot Graham and Liz had a series of disagreements, leading to some tension at home. Come Thursday morning Graham was told he can’t use the ‘chariot’ to go and take photographs. This left Graham with the choice of either abandoning the shoot and staying at home, or shooting somewhere within an hours walking distance.

Bardon Hill is the highest point in Leicestershire, standing at 912 feet (278 m) above sea level, but in comparison to the nearby Beacon Hill it seems to gain little attention or interest.

The presence of Bardon Hill was consistent during our journeys around North West Leicestershire. No matter where we ventured the radio mast at its summit always found a way to reveal itself and the hills heavily scarred (by a “Super-Quarry”) west face. Graham has wanted to walk to the summit ever since he arrived in Coalville in 1988. He’s lived, for most of the last twenty-seven years, at the foot of it, but due to the inevitable distraction of daily life, he never quite found the time to make the climb. He currently lives just around the corner from one of several public footpaths leading to the summit, it was really the only viable option for a shoot of any interest this week. So Graham would therefore finally realise one of his ultimate long-standing ambitions. 

This would be the last Coalville Photographed shoot I would film. Although I continued to join Graham for several more shoots, though it was becoming increasingly difficult for him to negotiate the time away, I only made photographs. But eventually, due to the increasing strain of caring for Liz, and finally, the loss of his temporary respite each Thursday morning, Graham was forced into publishing the last Coalville Photographed post, in June 2016. He has however vowed to maintain the page with occasional photographs taken as he goes about his daily chores.

Zine review: Gloucestershire by Ted Homer

We recently interviewed University of the West of England graduate, Ted Homer, about his work. Ted kindly sent us a copy of his brand new zine, Gloucestershire, and so we've decided to create a short review. Presented in the form of a flexible paperback, and A4 in size, this zine has a good amount of information and images inside it. The text and images flow well, and the introductory paragraph is a must. The zine takes us on a journey, seemingly allowing us to follow Ted around and find out more about Gloucestershire where he currently resides.

The layout of the zine is what works so well. Single images to a page are printed as big as they can be for the overall size of the zine, presenting us with detail and clarity. Other pages show us two images together, giving the opportunity to contemplate and perceive different spots next to one another. On the odd occasion larger images are presented next to each other without text, and I think these are visually my favourite. 

 
 

I've given Gloucestershire a 4.5/5 rating as I usually much prefer a more stable book that I'm able to leave open and look back at when I feel the need to. This is of course very much a personal preference, and is probably due to the fact this is the first zine I've ever owned.

Overall the sequence and selection of images work well; a quick flick through the zine gives an obvious insight into Ted’s photographic style and the sorts of locations he likes to work in. This is a very simple layout nonetheless, a great flick through zine when you need some inspiration!

Future Photograd: Ted Homer

University of the West of England graduate, Ted Homer, spoke to us about his new body of work titled Gloucestershire which will be exhibited in August alongside an accompanying zine. We can't wait to get our hands on one!

Series length
The idea for this project was underlying when I left university in 2013, but I couldn’t act on it due to funding a project on this scale. A year later I acquired funding for the project from English Arts Council and after a couple of months of planning, I started to shoot. I was taking photographs for the next year and a half. Then I started scanning and creating an edit I was happy with to be used in an exhibition and a publication, this has taken up the last 3 months.

Series influences
The original idea of focusing solely on a county partly came from the county-by-county architectural guides authored by Nikolaus Pevsner. Once I started the project I tried to read and watch anything about Gloucestershire that I could find. My work is also influenced by traditional landscape painters, such as Gainsborough and Constable. 

Future aims for the work
I’m planning a exhibition for the work to take place in August, which is going to be in Gloucester. As part of the project there will be a zine that, for the first run will be free at the exhibition and then free via my website. I would like to show the work to as many communities across the county as possible, so I’ll try to exhibit the work at least a couple more times within Gloucestershire. One other thing I would like to achieve with the project would be some form of archive for the images that didn’t make the edit, I have nearly 3,000 images on a hard drive, and even though they didn’t make the cut they would offer something if shown.  

Is the series finished?
It's nearly there. The edit is done, the zine is finally being printed. Currently I'm in the early stages of organising the exhibition in Gloucester, with images already at the printers and framers.
