Artist Statement: Call Me Kelly explores the performative nature of black female identity through my use of wigs to attempt to embody different characters or versions of myself within physical and digital spaces.
The work stems from an idea I came across in the book Black Cultural Traffic: Crossroads in Global Performance and Popular Culture that compared being black in a predominantly white society to feeling like you’re wearing a mask. I began to wonder whether it’s possible to define where the mask ends and the true self begins and how I could best portray this metaphorical mask as something physical.
