Artist StatementCoastal Contamination highlights the destructive impact of human activity on the environment, by focusing on the land and marine life in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), a sparsely populated region that is designated for conservation. The backshore - the undefined area between the land and sea linking the ecosystems together - has become contaminated with runoff pollution, indicating mankind’s recklessness towards the natural environment.

To accentuate the natural beauty of the landscape and entice the viewer, I have visually portrayed the destruction to the land using abstract and aesthetic imagery. The vibrant colours, not usually associated with a typical British seascape have been digitally enhanced in post-production and also created using a makeshift plastic filter over the camera lens referencing one of the prime sources of marine pollution: non-biodegradable waste.

Coastal Contamination presents an alluring, yet dystopian view of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where pollution is not expected but it has still tainted the landscape. These images act as a visual warning that further damage is inevitable if mankind continues to exploit the land. I have created this body of work to generate an increase in environmental awareness, highlight the fragility of the environment and to foster a sense of connection between the viewer and their surroundings.
