Book Descriotion: Slices of Red explores personal and social memory in relation to identity and politics.

The collages are created with the use of found photographs from family albums dating the previous century. While working with personal and other family’s memories, I illustrate the commonality of behaviour and belonging. The stories recounted from first person’s point of view obliterate the individual and create a collective story that references the communist era.

Growing up in the years after the fall of the Iron Curtain and never experiencing the system through my own eyes, I have been raised with the perception of a world no longer existing. Narrating mundane memories, shared experiences and everyday struggle of citizens from the People’s Republic of Bulgaria, the absurd embedded in the normality start to emerge to the surface.

The constructivist design used in the work creates a contrast between the movement’s ideology and the concept of the project, allowing the truth to slip out through the slices.
